Bengal cats are something of an oddity in that they have a scientific experiment to thank for creating their breed in the first place. The first animals were bred by geneticists at the University of California in the 1960s, as part of a study into how Asian leopard cats are immune to feline leukemia. Bengal cats are a hybrid breed developed over several generations through a program of selectively crossbreeding domestic cats, possessing desired features, with Asian Leopard Cats (ALC) and ALC hybrids. The principle of hybrid vigor dictates that hybrid cats are often healthier and larger than either parent. Bengal cats are hybrids which have descended from crosses between wild leopard cats from Southeast Asia, and domestic cats. Early attempts to domesticate leopard cat kittens proved to be a failure, while bringing in domestic cat blood meant that the new breed was easier to house train, and friendlier with people.
Bengal cats are hybrids, and still have a trace of that wild blood in their veins. Sometimes it will show up in a kitten many generations separated from the wild ancestor. Bengal cats are the descendents of a cross between an Asian Leopard cat and a domestic cat. The goal in developing the domestic Bengal cat breed was to preserve a strong physical resemblance to it's beautiful wild ancestor and at the same time the new domestic breed was designed to be a pleasant and trustworthy family companion.
